Wow that’s ridiculous and I’ve been in that position at YVR. Took 35 mins to “rapid deplane” even though the bridge was docked the whole time. Took that long to get a Wheelchair pax off… fuel leak, cabin had a nearly flammable atmosphere.

Took ATC long enough to stop feeding the troll by simply reiterating instructions [and then giving a number to call] instead of debating the deviation. Particularly after the popcorn comment. So many cringe moments here. (I'm not a pilot or anything like that and don't claim to do either's job better. What I've gathered from the comments is there's multiple other ways to deal with this - just not on frequency when other pilots need timely info and instructions. And there seems to be a common thread with immaturity regardless of setting or profession.)

Ah, my local airport. No updates to tech since Northrop barely uses the runways anymore and can't run it's tests as they used to giving reason to pay for upgrades, but the easiest place to rent a car out of for work related travel. Good for the airshows, though.

As a local listener (I have a handheld and live under the ILS slope for 23L/R) this controller is by far and away my favorite. Clear, concise, and stern when the situation calls for it, but also jovial as needed. Also, I'm pretty sure the LiveATC reciever is located over the bluff NE off the end of the 5 end of the airport. The refraction angle of transmissions near the airport over that bluff mean that anything below about 1000' baro is hard to hear from the ground. Much easier to hear from the highway or the residentials in Alcoa off the 23 end.

That Captain was awesome. He realizes that if he orders an evacuation via the slides that there WILL be injuries. He pre-orders that ambulances accordingly. He wasn't far from ordering the slide evacuation.

Took me a minute to work out what had happened.... it wasn't until I saw the runways on the background that I realised 8168 had executed a pretty hard left turn before they'd even appeared on ATC radar, despite being instructed to turn 180? I thought the freakout was the potential LOS between 2627 and 8168 and was like "... but she turned right to 180 as instructed". Ooof.

Maybe this airport needs immediate closure in order that it can get its act together. Disgusting procedures currently in use.

Good exchange from the student pilot. However, I think he could've been more clear by saying "I absolutely could handle a 4 knot tailwind landing, but legally I cannot until I'm commercial licensed"

Just so everyone knows. It is not specifically illegal to land on a taxiway. But it had better either be an emergency and it better not be your fault, or it better be planned. I have landed twice on taxiways with an airliner. Both times it was planned because the runway was closed. They gave us performance numbers and briefed us first. Once in SFO and once in CID. Landing on a taxiway is a good last choice if you can’t make an alternate and the runway is fouled. It’s the same length, structural sound for your airplane and just a bit narrower. So rather than running out of fuel and trying to dead stick a jet into a field. Just declare an emergency and land on the taxiway. The FAA agrees.

Dick controller. STUDENT says he’s unable… controller should work with him. Not berate him which could easily get him flustered and make a real mistake

There was no reason for the controller to be so rude to the student. I’m tired of controllers being so dismissive of GA pilots. They have as much right to the airspace as the air carrier.

There’s always the “accidental hot mic button“ time out you can give the controller for a minute or two.

When doing my 10 night landings for my ppl at kafw wind was 18 @ 12 G18. They were landing heavies on 18 so they put me on the parallel. My very first downwind landing was at night. We did stop n goes to save time and get that box checked. 4th lap one of those gusts picked us up and carried us about 3,000’ down the runway. Still had plenty of room, but the controller instructed me to make a Rt 180 in the downwind and start using 36. It was a good evening.

The student was perfect, the controller was arrogant and wrong. This is very concerning, especially with a student pilot who might just accept a bad clearance. It's not about a 4 knot tailwind on a long runway, it's about roles, responsibilities and safety. I've been in a few situations like this over the years (rare but it happens) and it's those times the pilot needs to remind the controller that he's not the pilot in command, as this excellent student did. The pilot and controller should work together, but the pilot is responsible for the safe completion of the flight (see FAR 91.3). For example, I was flying from OKC to CLT IFR in an unpressurized single when a line of t-storms built up over Knoxville, so Memphis Center and I discussed it and then I diverted south. On contact with Atlanta Center I was instructed to proceed direct to Knoxville. I replied, "Unable due to weather". The controller came back sarcastically with, "You can't fly to Knoxville?", to which I replied, "Unable due to the line of thunderstorms I just vectored 80 miles south to get around, request direct CLT (I was on a GPS direct clearance)". Another, more mature voice came on and asked "Sir, can you accept direct Spartanburg VOR then direct?" "Yes sir, I can do that!" Again, most controllers are great and many more times I've had great experiences with controllers going out of their way to help, but this arrogant attitude should never be acceptable. It's counter to aviation safety and should be actively discouraged.

I dont think the pilot was given enough information to make the best safety decisions. Where were stairs coming from, how long would it take them, what emergency service protocols were.

I understand that the airport took way too unfuckingbelievably long, but why didn’t the PIC deploy the slides and evacuate? Why wait for the stairs in this situation? You want to as far away from the aircraft as possible as soon as possible.

Who was mad? I didn't hear anyone who sounded mad, and I'm a Minnesotan. We're known for being oversensitive to people being "mad" at us. It's not as though the ATC was making excuses. He made a statement about the reliability of their equipment when it comes to wind speed. The pilot acknowledged that it was a problem at this airport. Why create conflict where there is none? There's enough conflict in the world.

The Captain made it very clear that he wanted fire services standing by at his aircraft but the fire service remained at their station? This is not acceptable.

After hearing this it does sound bonkers, but I'd also be intrested in all the other work that air traffic person was doing at the same time as I presume other flights would be involved. I do find it hard to even imagine how that 1 hour felt, and I also don't fully understand why the firefighters were told to stay back when it's there job to kinda get into the action so to speka. I could understand stair people staying back by police but fire not so much.
